Gingko Home Furnishings Naturally Modern Designs Gingko Home Furnishings was created as a solution for our many friends searching for well-designed, practical, quality home furnishings at an affordable price point. Our Approach Our Products
Each of Gingko’s pieces are a product of top grade timber handcrafted by old world techniques. The result is a unique quality that increases in beauty over time. The entire collection is built with solid wood kiln-dried for stability. Pieces are constructed using mortise and tenon joints for increased stability and their ability to accommodate wood’s natural movement in different environments. Every piece is an original. Individual workmanship and the organic quality of the wood itself may cause slight variation among items. Due to the hand-made nature of our items, dimensions are quoted it the nearest half-inch. Slight variations should be expected. Materials: The overwhelming majority of our pieces are built with Walnut. We have chosen Walnut due to it's stability in different environments which is important to avoice movement and cracking as humidity levels change. The Walnut we use is sustainably harvested and kiln and air-dried over many months. This allows the wood to reach a stable state. Walnut is a slow-growth, dense wood that is known for the beauty of its strength and beauty. All pieces are hand finished using multiple states--first a light stain is applied to even the tones of the wood. The Natural and Dark finishes add color as desired but reveal the natural grain of the wood.
Next, several very thin coats of natural shellac dissolved in de-natured alcohol are applied. This seals the wood and protects it from interaction with liquids. Finally several light layers of wax are applied and buffed to a matte/satin finish. The wax protects the shellac finish so that over time scratches will mar the wax but not permeate the shelllac. Typical maintenance will require period reapplication of thin layers of furniture wax to protect heavily used surfaces.
why gingko? No, it's not because our furniture is built of Gingko wood, but rather because the lore of the gingko tree inspires us.... The Ginkgo tree is a living fossil and the earliest leaf fossils date from 270 million years ago. It was rediscovered in 1691 in China and was brought to this country in the late 1700's. Individual trees may live as long as 3,000 years and the seeds and leaves are used in medicine throughout the world.
